Who Are The Patients Being Helped By

Baseball Physical Therapy Expert
Chris McKenzie?

I’ve worked with thousands of athletes, especially pitchers, helping them prevent and address throwing pain. When a player experiences pain while throwing, it impacts their ability to throw hard, and control the ball, and ultimately affects their confidence and mindset. One common issue I see in other providers’ approaches to treating throwing injuries is a narrow focus on the arm alone. While the arm may be where the pain is felt, you can’t ignore the rest of the body and the role it plays in the injury.

Why Do My Patients Choose Me?

Many of my patients have worked with other providers before seeing me, but they often come in frustrated because essential aspects weren’t properly measured or strengthened. A throwing rehab protocol requires a comprehensive approach, and without that, the problem persists.

I’ve worked with thousands of baseball athletes, including pitchers with throwing injuries. I come from a track and field background, so I don’t have the biases of someone who played baseball themselves. Early in my career, I started seeing so many shoulder and elbow cases, which led to working with baseball players. I developed a strong interest in the shoulder joint due to its complexity, and my success in treating shoulder and elbow injuries led me to delve deeper into how best to treat baseball players.

What Makes My Treatments Different?

I conducted a thorough review of the existing literature on treating throwing injuries. While I agreed with some findings, I found gaps, especially around leg strength recommendations and understanding the mechanics behind issues like hip rotation. These gaps led me to develop my own method for evaluating baseball players and identifying the root causes of their throwing pain.

Often, athletes come to me after trying various other treatments – physical therapy, chiropractic adjustments, rest, ice, anti-inflammatories – only to find that they still can’t throw without pain. The issue usually lies in unresolved mechanical problems, lingering weaknesses, or tightness.

One of the biggest gaps I see in previous treatments for baseball pitchers is the failure to measure their total arc of motion. For any baseball player, especially pitchers, the total arc of motion is critical, yet it’s rarely evaluated and that is what I focus on at McKenzie Sports Physical Therapy.

“After 2 shoulder injuries and numerous PT's, I have found a place where the genuine human-concern and care are phenomenal"

Hands down the best PT in Philadelphia. I’ve had two shoulder surgeries and have been to numerous PTs over the years. The expertise, care and genuine human concern here is phenomenal. You get 1 one 1 attention at every visit, and they always listen to your complaints. If you have any musculoskeletal injury, particularly one with complexity – I would strongly recommend coming here. 5/5. Also PT Pete is the man.

“Not only did my injury get treated but i also got educated how exercises would help my injury and why”

I went to McKenzie Sports Physical Therapy based on a recommendation and I’m so glad I did. This is what medical care should be. From the time I called to get information to my first appointment and follow-up, everyone was extremely patient, kind, friendly, caring, and knowledgeable. I worked with Pete on my PT and he was extremely professional, and just fantastic in general. He took his time to explain everything from my injury to what exercises would help and why, and he gave me a PT routine that I’m sure will have me feeling better soon. I truly appreciate this practice. Thank you so much for everything!

JENNIFER HELFAND, PHILADELPHIA

“The knowledge and skills they provide are second to none.”

McKenzie is the exemplar of what a physical therapy practice should be. I highly recommend this practice to anyone looking for a true partner in their injury recovery. What I valued most was that Emily and Chris thought critically about the situation and listened to my goals for recovery. We discussed how my body was responding during and after each visit and adjusted the course of my treatment as needed. This continual dialog and reassessment was key to my recovery. Should I need physical therapy again (and history suggests I will!), I would not hesitate to reach out to the McKenzie team.
